When considering a commission, it can be helpful to think about the below four things. Don't worry if you haven't decided on everything before getting in touch. I'll guide you through the process and help you find the best option for your space, style, and budget.

Not sure where to start? Let me help you.

Subject matter

The best commissions are often rooted in a personal connection. This could be a favourite landscape, a meaningful place, a garden, a treasured memory, or any location that holds special significance.

Reference photographs are always helpful, although I can work with a collection of images and ideas to develop a composition that captures the feeling of a place. Sometimes however, a subject matter may just not be suited to my personal style - if so, I'll be honest with you if I think that I can't provide you with what you are looking for.

Size

Consider where the artwork will hang and the impact you'd like it to have within the space. A smaller piece can create an intimate focal point, while a larger painting can transform a room. Remember to factor in any mount or framing that you are planning on.

Typically, I would not recommend a picture size smaller than 8x8inches unless it is an extremely simple composition.

Framing and material

Framing style is very personal! A framed artwork provides a polished, gallery-quality finish and can help complement both the painting and its surroundings.

Materials and framing often go hand in hand, so it's worth considering how you'd like the finished artwork to be displayed.

Stretched Canvas (20-40mm deep)

A stretched canvas offers the greatest visual impact and gives the artwork a contemporary, gallery-style feel. These pieces look particularly striking when paired with a floating frame, although the canvas depth can limit some traditional framing options.

Canvas Board (2-3mm deep)

Canvas board provides greater flexibility when it comes to framing. Its slim profile means it can be fitted into most standard picture frames (subject to depth allowances), as well as specialist styles such as St Ives frames. This is a popular choice for clients who want a wider range of framing possibilities.

Paper

Paintings on heavyweight artist's paper can be mounted and framed behind glass using traditional picture frames, creating an elegant and refined finish.

If you're unsure which option would best suit your space, I can advise on both materials and framing to help you achieve the look you're after.

Budget

All of the above will impact the price of the piece!

Commission prices vary depending on the size, complexity, framing and level of detail involved. Larger, framed pieces and more intricate compositions will require a greater investment.

If you have a budget in mind, please let me know when you enquire and I'll be happy to discuss the options available.
